Predictable and Effective

How Metal Braces Work

Metal braces are a mechanical system for moving teeth using brackets, a wire, and controlled pressure over time.

First, a small stainless-steel bracket is bonded to each tooth. A thin wire (the archwire) then connects all the brackets together. That wire is shaped to match the patient’s ideal tooth alignment.

The wire applies continuous pressure on the teeth, and the teeth respond by moving through the bone into a better position.

This movement is slow but consistent, and guided by regular adjustments.

Modern Design

Self-Ligating Braces

Dr. Hagan specializes in self-ligating braces to deliver excellent results. They use a built-in clip or door mechanism to hold the archwire. This means:

  • No elastic ties on each bracket: The wire is secured by the bracket’s clip.
  • Some patients find brushing around the brackets a bit simpler.
  • Comfortable force levels: These systems can work well with lighter, continuous forces, especially in the early alignment stages.

Self-ligating braces use the same core mechanics as traditional braces, and are an excellent choice for nearly all cases.

Reliable and Proven

Traditional Braces

Traditional twin braces are the classic metal braces that have been used for decades. They work reliably across many case types, so Dr. Hagan may recommend them for special cases.

The bracket design features four “wings” where the elastic ligature wraps around to secure the archwire. A few key points:

  • Elastic ties: Patients can choose their preferred colors each visit.
  • Strong and Precise: Dr. Hagan can use an array of tools and techniques, solving difficult bite corrections and rotations.
  • Low-profile designs: Modern brackets are flatter and smoother, making them more comfortable.

Strength Meets Precision

Benefits of Metal Braces

Handles All Cases

Metal braces handle complex cases that other options sometimes can’t. Severe crowding, significant bite corrections, rotations – metal braces have the mechanical control to address them.

Minimal Compliance

Braces are fixed. Patients don’t need to remember to wear anything or swap trays. They’re always working, without compliance being a variable.

Durable and Strong

Stainless steel brackets are durable. With reasonable care around hard, sticky foods, they hold up very well during regular eating and sports (with a mouthguard).

Cost-Effective Option

For many patients, metal braces are often the most effective and most budget-friendly orthodontic option compared with ceramic braces or some advanced aligner setups.

What to Expect During Treatment

01

Initial Consult

Dr. Hagan thoroughly reviews the patient’s case and imaging. He walks through treatment options and builds a tailored plan – which teeth need to move, how much, and in what order.

02

Braces Placement

Teeth are cleaned, then brackets are placed on each tooth with adhesive. A curing light hardens the adhesive. The wire is secured with elastics or clips. Patients usually feel pressure, not pain, during this visit.

03

First Week With Braces

Soreness or tenderness is common, and cheeks and lips may feel irritated as they get used to the brackets. Orthodontic wax and softer foods can help at this stage.

04

Adjustment Visits

During follow-up visits, Dr. Hagan will check tooth movement and make adjustments and changes to the wire or brackets if necessary. He’ll also add or remove auxiliaries.

05

Braces Removal

When teeth and bite are where they need to be, brackets and adhesive are removed, and retainers are delivered to hold the teeth in their final position.

Caring For Metal Braces

Metal braces require extra attention with brushing, flossing, and food choices to keep teeth, gums, and enamel healthy during treatment.

We’ll provide detailed hygiene instructions, recommended tools and helpful devices, and food guidelines.

Metal Braces FAQ

Treatment time largely depends on the complexity of the case. Mild spacing or crowding might take around 12-18 months, moderate cases can be 18-24 months, and complex bite corrections can run closer to 24-30+ months.

Breakage rates, hygiene, and growth patterns in younger patients all matter for treatment time.

Dr. Hagan will give an estimated time range after reviewing records, and that estimate gets refined as treatment progresses.

Many kids start full braces around ages 11-13, when most or all permanent teeth are in. “Phase I” or early treatment may be needed for some younger children (7-10), requiring partial braces or other appliances if there are jaw growth issues, crossbites, or severe crowding that must be addressed.

Many patients start their braces treatment during their teenage years as well.

Yes. Adults can absolutely get metal braces, and they are a common treatment.

A few differences in braces for adults: jawbones are no longer growing, so bite changes rely more on tooth movement or, in some cases, surgical coordination. Also, adults often have previous dental work (crowns, implants, missing teeth) that need to be factored into the plan. Gum health is another area with extra focus.

Many adults choose metal braces specifically for reliability in more complex or restorative cases. To learn more, visit our Orthodontics for Adults page.
