Digital Precision

How Invisalign® Treatment Works

Invisalign® treatment uses a series of clear aligners that move teeth by applying pressure over time. Each tray is worn for a period of time, then patients move to the next set.

Treatment starts with a digital scan using an iTero™ scanner, creating a precise 3D model of the teeth, and allowing patients to see a simulation of their projected results.

From there, aligners are manufactured based on a custom treatment plan created for each patient. Aligner sets are worn for 1-2 weeks (exact timing varies by case), then patients move to the next set.

The total treatment time and number of aligners hinges on the complexity of the case; Dr. Hagan will provide guidance for each patient.

Clear aligners, real results

Benefits of Invisalign® Treatment

Aesthetics

Low-visibility look in day-to-day conversations and photos. Ideal for patients who want great results with a discreet look during treatment.

Technology

The digital iTero™ scanner means patients get a cutting-edge treatment plan built for them, with precision trays built to match that plan.

Hygiene

Because the aligners are removable, patients can take them out to eat, and can brush and floss normally without having to work around brackets or wires.

Comfort

Invisalign® clear aligners are made from SmartTrack® material, meaning they’re smooth, BPA-free, and fit snugly over teeth.

What to Expect During Treatment

01

Consultation

We start with an orthodontic exam and a conversation about goals. Dr. Hagan will discuss whether Invisalign® treatment is the right fit for the patient’s case and what results to expect.

02

Scanning

We’ll take imaging and X-rays, as well as iTero™ scanning that shows a digital simulation of the patient’s potential results. This imaging is used to create a custom treatment plan for each patient.

03

Fitting Aligners

Once the custom aligners arrive, patients come in and learn how to insert, remove, and care for them. If required by the case, attachments may be placed to assist with tooth movement.

04

Daily Wear

Aligners must be worn for 20-22 hours per day, and are only removed for brushing, eating and drinking anything other than water. Each set is worn for the prescribed period before moving on.

05

Check-Ins

Patients come in on a regular cadence – usually every 6-8 weeks – to confirm tracking and make adjustments. Some cases run straight through the original set of aligners. Some need a refinement phase with a new scan and extra aligners.

Ideal Candidates for Invisalign® Treatment

Patients are a fit if they:

  • Have a case that is mild to moderate in severity
  • Can wear aligners for 20+ hours per day, every day
  • Diligently maintain oral hygiene
  • Prefer the low-visibility look

Patients may not be a fit if they:

  • Have a complex case that requires more strength or control, such as vertical movement and severe rotations
  • Will not comply with wear time requirements
  • Will not consistently remove Invisalign® clear aligners when eating or drinking non-water liquids

Caring For Clear Aligners

Rinse and clean aligners daily with a soft toothbrush, clear liquid soap, and warm or cool water. Avoid hot water.

Use the case to stow aligners when not in use; this greatly reduces the the chances they are lost or damaged.

Invisalign® Treatment FAQ

Patients usually feel pressure when switching to a new set of aligners. That pressure is a sign the aligners are working to move teeth. It tends to fade within a few days, then the next tray change brings it back in a smaller wave.

Treatment length depends on each case and the level of movement needed. Minor cases may finish in 6 months. More involved cases can take 12-18 months or longer. Dr. Hagan provides a time estimate during the consultation after reviewing the digital scan and treatment plan.

Patients should contact our office right away. The right course of action depends on where patients are in the series and how the teeth are tracking. Waiting without a plan can create setbacks and delays.

Yes. Teens can be great Invisalign candidates when wear time is consistent and the case is planned correctly. Parents usually like the removability for meals and hygiene, and teens tend to like the low-visibility look.

Yes. Adults are good candidates for Invisalign® clear aligners, and choose them for many reasons – professional settings, comfort, hygiene, convenience. Adult cases can range from small adjustment to full treatment, depending on severity and goals.
